The Portland regional office is located near the Portland Airport and employs roughly 75-100 employees. This office operates in Oregon and Southwestern Washington. Recent projects completed include: Elephant Lands at the Portland Zoo, the Sellwood Bridge, and the Ilani Casino Resort in LaCenter.

 

GBI considers employees to be their greatest asset. The Portland Regional Office is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the position of Estimating Intern.
 

 

JOB SUMMARY:
The Estimating Intern position is a part-time position, working roughly 20 hours per week. The successful candidate will provide support to the estimating department, responsible for preparing estimates as needed for projects, specifications, proposals, and other documentation. Assist in analyzing and interpreting plans to determine quantities of heavy construction projects.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Copy bid information and organize bid files for Estimators.
  • Assist Estimators by downloading and printing plans.
  • Contact Subcontractors, Material Suppliers and Trucking Companies.
  • Review plans and specifications for information necessary to quantify scope of work.
  • Must be able to understand staging and phasing concepts, understand stationing on roadways and interpret public works plans.
  • Review scope with Project Estimator for completeness.
  • Perform length and area takeoff for surface improvements and earthwork analysis utilizing latest technology software.
  • Prepares summary of quantity takeoff for Estimator. Double checks takeoff for accuracy and completeness.
  • Understand the elements in the submission of public works bids (bid runs); assist bid reviews and closing.
  • Interpret plans and coordinate take off quantities as they relate to specific items of work identified by our customer in coordination with an Estimator.
  • May attend pre-bid meetings and other construction meetings, as needed. 
  • Maintains a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in an effective manner with Customers, Co-workers, Clients and Supervisors.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned by Supervisor.

 

SKILLS/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:

  • One-year of college or technical school; three to six months related experience and/or training; or the equivalent combinations of education and experience.
  • Basic plan reading skills.
  • Must be able to understand basic math formulas for calculating areas and volumes of basic geometrical shapes.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Knowledge of all standard office equipment - phone, computer, fax, copier, etc.
  • Intermediate computer experience using Excel and Word; Agtek, AutoCAD, Outlook and Bluebeam a plus.
  • Possess strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in an environment of many different personalities.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and be able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Must be detail oriented and organized.
