GBI has always maintained that our employees are our greatest asset and we are now seeking to add to our team in Maui, Hawaii. We are searching for a qualified candidate to fill an opening for a Project Engineer I.

 

Job Summary
The Project Engineer I will act as on-site engineer reporting to a designated Project Manager and is responsible for administering the technical aspects of assigned projects. Works closely with, subcontractors, vendors, utility companies and local, state and federal agencies to ensure work is being completed on-schedule and on-budget.

 

Essential Functions

  • Works with Project Engineers and Project Managers to lead the contractual change order process with customers and subcontractors. Responsible for obtaining all executed contracting instruments (i.e. change request authorizations, notices to proceed, change orders, etc.). Receives internal approval and owner approval before services are rendered.
  • Responsible for supervising and managing several important project documents, including: daily reports submittals, transmittals, RFI's, contracts, permits, progress photos, and traffic control plans.
  • Drafts formal correspondence and proposals for Project Managers and other supervisors.
  • Prepares subcontract change orders for the approval of the Project manager or other supervisor.
  • Scrutinizes job cost reports and corrects miss-postings and other errors. Performs cost report audits to ensure proper coding of material, labor, equipment and other project costs. Works to identify and correct behavior contributing to cost overrun.
  • Supports Project Manager and other supervisors in preparing summary reports, pricing additional work, extra work (force account) summaries, and bidding of construction projects.
  • Tracks and monitors daily, weekly and monthly production costs and quantities and assists Project Manager with preparation of monthly work-in-process cost and revenue forecasts
  • Corresponds with project owners on outstanding issues, i.e. unanswered RFI's, submittals, change order requests, field directives, etc.
  • Creates purchase order commitments for job specific purchases under the direction of the Project Manager or other supervisor.
  • Verifies that all required submittals (Certificates, shop drawings, catalogue cuts, samples, etc.) comply with contract obligations and ensures that all supplier invoices are reviewed, cost coded, approved and submitted for prompt payment following delivery.
  • Purchases major materials and assists in awarding subcontractor work.
  • Coordinates quality control testing and inspection by various agencies and/or third parties.
  • Prepares and processes project closing documentation ("as-built" drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, final acceptance letters, Notice of Completion, final billing invoices, and retention billing) and obtains lien releases from subcontractors and material suppliers.
  • Oversees subcontractor work. Inspects work and makes recommendations for acceptance to the Project manager or other supervisor. Verifies punch list completion.
  • Obtains necessary utility clearances and required permits.
  • Performs safety audits and corrects deficiencies.
  • Maintains CPM project schedule and other near term schedules. Monitors overall construction progress. Communicates changes and delays to Project Manager or other supervisor.
  • Coordinates and schedules job-specific resources, including labor, equipment, trucking, etc.
  • Studies and understands the company’s GPS technology practices. Manages GPS technology for all assigned jobs, including site calibrations, topography measurement, volume calculations, and machine data management.
  • Identifies daily production material needs and supports field crews by providing materials and supplies.
  • Closely monitors the processing of projects' submittals in accordance with GBI's procurement policies and the GBI's Quality Management Manual.
  • Ensures utility locates and Underground Service Alerts are timely and accurate
  • Must be able to drive.

REQUIRED SKILLS / TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Bachelor's Degree required in Construction Management or Civil Engineering

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in heavy civil construction

  • Must have computer experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project

  • Valid Driver's License with clean driver's abstract

  • Obtain and maintain CPR, AED and First Aid certification, OSHA 30, MUTCD Supervisor\
