Goodfellow Bros. (GBI) is a 98-year-old, 4th generation family-owned heavy/civil construction company, operating in Washington, Hawaii, Oregon and California. GBI has experienced tremendous success over its history in both the private and public market with projects spanning multiple states and multiple disciplines, including airports, bridges, dams, golf courses, harbors, highways, housing developments, marinas, parks, wastewater treatment facilities and wind and solar farms.

GBI has always maintained that our employees are our greatest asset and we are now seeking to add to our team. We are searching for a qualified candidate to fill an opening for a Director of Human Resources. The HR Director will be based in Hawaii and the position requires travel and participation in company events and trainings in our various locations.

Summary:
The HR Director is an executive position under the direction of the CEO and will provide leadership and direction with respect to our most important asset, our employees.

The successful candidate will proactively lead our executive management towards recruiting, employee onboarding, benefit packages, employee performance evaluations, management of employee files, compensation benchmarks and trends, employee relations, and other human capital initiatives. This position will manage the HR department, a staff of three, located in Hawaii, California and Washington.

Essential Functions:
  • Active in a leadership role within the executive team to live out the company’s mission and vision statements by being the voice of the employees and the company in different situations
  • Educate managers and executives regarding our legal obligations to our employees and the employment laws in the states where we work.
  • Work with team to review and revise employee handbooks and policies to ensure all are up-to-date with legal requirements.
  • Serve as GBI’s EEO Officer and Ethics Officer, including organizational training
  • Lead investigations of harassment or discrimination complaints
  • Conduct outreach to minority and female organizations to increase diversity and fulfill goals
  • Work with the executive team and brokers to create competitive and cost-effective benefit plans
  • Active participant in benefit renewals and plan structure development
  • Oversee benefit administration, FMLA administration, ACA reporting and 5500 tax filings
  • Ensure that GBI is competitive with compensation by using salary data offered by third parties
  • Create a recruiting plan with the executive team, and assist with college recruiting and job postings using applicant tracking system
  • Utilize central job description repository to maintain job descriptions
  • Provide on-boarding support, including consistent offer letters
  • Provide performance management tools and training, and assist with
  • Assist with and review Performance Improvement Plans and Coach to Corrects
  • Coordinate and assist with terminations and documents associated with them
  • Serve as a resource to management and employees for HR-related questions regarding state and federal law, or company policy
  • Serve as a resource to employees experiencing personal issues and be able to provide assistance as needed (EAP, etc.)
  • Ability to work with union employees as well as their unions and our third-party associations and understand Collective Bargaining Agreements
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • At least 10 Years as an HR Manager with progressive experience in an organization with greater than 500 employees.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • SHRM-SCP certification preferred
  • Experience/knowledge in multi-state employment law/regulations
  • Experience with MS Office; knowledge of HRIS systems a plus
  • Service-oriented
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with employees at all levels
  • Self-motivated, with strong time management skills
  • Able to work independently or with a team
  • Detail-oriented and organized with strong multi-taking abilities
