We are looking for a Safety Specialist to add to our team on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii.

The Safety Specialist will be under the direction of the Regional Safety Manger, and will work in partnership with our project team members to provide technical assistance and support of specific projects to maintain safety regulations, policies and protocols related to the control of environmental and/or occupational hazards. The Safety Specialist will focus on project specific inspections and needs, while monitoring established policies and procedures for safe practices when employees are faced with occupational hazards. Lastly, this individual will act as a resource to job sites in meeting the Company’s expectations as outlined in the Company Safety & Health Manual.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plans, administers, implements and coordinates the Company’s Safety Programs to control risks and losses.
  • Prepares and conducts safety orientations, training programs, safety meetings.
  • Responsible for compliance with required training programs and record keeping.
  • Coaches employees to meet the expectations with regards to the Corporate Safety Program.
  • Assist in the administration and enforcement of the Company Substance Abuse Program (Drug & Alcohol policy).
  • Analyzes and classifies risks as to frequency, potential severity, and measures financial impact of risk on the Company.
  • Prepares operational and risk reports for management analysis.
  • Identifies and appraises conditions which could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents. Prepares reports on the conditions identified and action taken to mitigate the potential exposure.
  • Maintains appropriate records on hazards and personnel exposure occurrences.
  • Assist management and/or committees in the development of policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for employees, subcontractors and general public.
  • Coordinates safety activities with management to ensure implementation of safety activities throughout the Company.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data related to exposure factors concerning occupational illnesses and accidents and prepares reports.
  • Maintains liaison with outside organizations to assure information exchange and mutual assistance
  • Assist Project teams in Subcontractor safety management and confirm compliance with our subcontract safety requirements.
  • Develops strategies, policies and procedures and implements control measures to ensure a safe working environment for the company’s employees.
  • Assists Project teams with Risk Management and attend pre-construction meetings.
  • Attends conferences, seminars and courses to maintain continued awareness of safety programs.
  • Understands and interprets local, state and federal regulations and statutes relative to environmental safety, employee safety, and Workers’ Compensation to ensure the Company is in Compliance.
  • Assists the Region in performing Root Cause Analysis for incidents and accidents.
  • Must be knowledgeable of and able to comprehend county, state and federal laws and regulations governing and/or affecting the construction industry, including but not limited to, OSHA, MSHA and EPA, and apply these concepts/regulations to construction sites.
  • Conducts inspections and enforces adherence to above laws, regulations, or Company policies governing worker health and safety.
  • Gathers and maintains accident, injury and other statistics and records.
  • Provides safety and loss control training to supervisors and employees, as necessary.
  • Inspects machinery, equipment and working conditions at construction sites to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health and regulations, other state and federal regulations governing the construction industry, and/or Company practices and procedures.
  • Observes workers to determine use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Checks to see whether hazardous materials are stored correctly, and that the employees are properly utilizing equipment.
  • Assists in rehabilitation of workers after accidents/injuries and makes sure they return to work successfully.
  • Participates in the investigation of employee accidents, claims, thefts and property losses. Coordinates the preparation of materials and evidence for use in hearings, litigation, and insurance claim cases.
  • This job classification is designated as “essential” for the Company. In case of emergency, “essential” positions are those required to assist with the Company’s emergency plans, investigations and the protection of Company assets. Personnel in designated “essential” positions are expected to report to work, even when operations has been officially declared to be on “restricted access” or “closed” due to adverse conditions.
  • Regular attendance is required for the position.
  • Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in safety, construction field preferred
  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) preferred
  • Must be able to operate electronics
  • Must be computer literate with thorough knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point. Typing skills are required.
  • Must have sufficient oral skills to communicate effectively with employees and management, and clients.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Clean driver’s abstract of record is required.
  • Must be knowledgeable of county, state and federal laws and regulations governing and/or affecting the construction industry, including, but not limited to, OSHA, MSHA and EPA.
  • Understands the different signals used at construction sites.
