We are searching for a qualified candidate to fill an opening for a Corporate Safety Director. The position will be based out of our Livermore, California office and requires travel to all regions, including Portland, OR, Seattle, WA and the Hawaiian Islands.

SUMMARY:
The responsibilities of the Corporate Safety Director focus on developing and implementing a positive safety culture for the Company and its affiliates and regions. The goal is to minimize injuries, lower the EMR, lower recordable rates, and manage risks in a cost-sensitive and effective manner. The Corporate Safety Director will be the leader of the Company’s safety programs, will manage the safety staff and will report directly to the Vice President of HR, Safety and Risk. The successful candidate will contribute to the vision, goals and objectives of the company and the fulfillment of those goals and objectives. They will also have extensive knowledge and experience in the heavy civil construction safety field.

FUNCTIONS:
  • Support project teams with the goal of 100% safety compliance assisting with the education (interpretation) of Company policies, rules and regulations.
  • Develop a vision and strategic direction for safety.
  • Lead the Safety Department in a positive and collaborative manner; develop a positive Company image, sell Safety at all levels.
  • In conjunction with risk manager, conducts investigations of industrial accidents, injuries or occupational disease to determine causes and preventive measures. Review findings from accident investigations and job site/facility inspections. Makes recommendations, if necessary, to alleviate exposure to the Company.
  • Promote safe working practices on projects that are preceded by pre-task plans or job hazard analysis.
  • In conjunction with senior management, establish department responsibilities and coordinate functions among department staff. Responsible for performance evaluations of safety staff, including quarterly check-ins and proactive identification of training opportunities.
  • Maintain, develop and lead the implementation of various training programs to educate managers and employees on issues related to health, safety, environmental, and initiative programs.
  • Research, identify, monitor and evaluate high risk exposures and new developments in changes in federal, state or local laws and regulations that may affect company operations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local safety rules, regulations, guidelines, laws, ordinances, and statutes.
  • Maintain extensive and frequent interaction with the executive management team, directors of operations, regional managers, safety staff and job site personnel.
  • Maintain extensive and frequent interaction with members of the external safety community, customer safety representatives, subcontractor safety representatives and contacts with federal, state and local agencies.
  • Enforce subcontractor safety and follow-up on deficiencies in subcontractor safety.
  • Review Company/employee safety programs to determine their adequacy.
  • Track and evaluate jobsite safety trends and leading risk indicators and collaborate with Company executives, and field leadership to develop and implement corrective measures and provide expertise in the inspection, analysis, audit and/or investigation of safety practices.
  • Ensure the entire safety team (Director included) is performing periodic, comprehensive jobsite inspections documenting such visits via the HCSS Safety Module.
  • Provide technical expertise and management guidance when investigating process failures and/or incidents and ensure proper records are completed and submitted. Develop and administer in the implementation of corrective actions as it relates to investigations, incidents, and communicate throughout the company of “lessons learned”. Develops health and safety training materials. Encourage and monitor the companies Near/Miss reporting program.
  • Responsible to manage compilation and submittal of internal, federal, state and local agency reports in relation to health, safety and environment.
  • Travel to the regional offices and job sites on a regular basis to develop a strong bond with field personnel and project management teams.
  • Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees’ exposure to chemical, physical and biological work hazards.
  • Compile, analyze and interpret statistical data related to occupational illness and accidents. Follow up with a recommendation to executive management.
  • Attend quarterly meetings (conference calls) with upper management and report on Safety
  • Review and draft Safety Plans for proposal documents.
  • Represent organization at safety-related hearings and investigations as requested.
  • Be a technical resource in assisting with the drafting and implementation of corporate safety and health programs, procedures and policies, leveraging industry programs and benchmark practices as necessary.
  • This position requires good oral communication skills to communicate effectively with the executive team, management, employees, clients, attorneys and local/state/federal agencies.
SKILLS/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
  • Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Safety/Construction Management/Business, plus 20 years of related safety experience.
  • Must possess or attain the CHST and AP/CSP certifications.
  • Certified in OSHA 500 and 501, or ability to attain.
  • Must have experience working with industrial claims processes.
  • Must be proficient using HCSS Safety, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook programs.
  • Valid State driver’s license and clear driver’s abstract record.
