GBI has always maintained that our employees are our greatest asset and we are now seeking to add to our team in Hawaii. We are searching for a qualified candidate to fill an opening for a Regional Safety Director.
 

 

SUMMARY:
Provide oversight and support to Safety personnel in cooperation with regional operations on a daily basis. Develop and mentor employees and take corrective action when necessary. Assure compliance and consistency with company processes concerning Safety. Provide environmental, health, and safety support to the operations and will ensure that all practices, procedures, and policies are in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. This position will develop and provide technical and administrative direction on all HSE decisions, which bear critical importance to overall company objectives, operations and initiatives. Coordinates, administers, and works closely with the company risk manager.

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in the heavy civil construction safety field within the State of Hawaii.

FUNCTIONS:
  • Support project teams with the goal of 100% safety compliance assisting with the education (interpretation) of Company policies, rules and regulations.
  • In conjunction with risk manager, conducts investigations of industrial accidents, injuries or occupational disease to determine causes and preventive measures. Review findings from accident investigations and job site/facility inspections. Makes recommendations, if necessary, to alleviate exposure to the Company.
  • Promote safe working practices on projects that are preceded by pre-task plans or job hazard analysis.
  • In conjunction with regional manager, establish department responsibilities and coordinate functions among department staff. Responsible for performance evaluations of direct reports, including quarterly check-ins and proactive identification of training opportunities.
  • Maintain, develop and lead the implementation of various training programs to educate managers and employees on issues related to health, safety, environmental, and initiative programs. Research, identify, monitor and evaluate high risk exposures and new developments in changes in federal, state or local laws and regulations that may affect company operations.
  • Review Company/employee safety programs to determine their adequacy.
  • Track and evaluate jobsite safety trends and leading risk indicators and collaborate with Company executives, and field leadership to develop and implement corrective measures and provide expertise in the inspection, analysis, audit and/or investigation of safety practices.
  • Ensure the entire safety team (Director included) is performing periodic, comprehensive jobsite inspections documenting such visits via the HCSS Safety Module.
  • Inspect Hawaii operations to detect existing and/or potential hazards and/or risk assessments. Determine corrective or preventative measures and follow up to ensure initiatives/measures have been implemented.
  • Provide technical expertise and management guidance when investigating process failures and/or incidents and ensure proper records are completed and submitted. Develop and administer in the implementation of corrective actions as it relates to investigations, incidents, and communicate throughout the company of “lessons learned”. Develops health and safety training materials. Encourage and monitor the companies Near/Miss reporting program.
  • Responsible to manage compilation and submittal of internal, federal, state and local agency reports in relation to health, safety and environment.
  • Assist with interpreting industrial safety regulations for safety personnel, and labor representatives.
  • Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees’ exposure to chemical, physical and biological work hazards.
  • Compile, analyze and interpret statistical data related to occupational illness and accidents. Follow up with a recommendation to executive management.
  • Assist, and contribute to development of, risk management systems.
  • Review and draft Safety Plans for proposal documents.
  • Assist with the implementation of corrective action plans to solve organizational or departmental problems.
  • Represent organization at safety-related hearings and investigations as requested.
  • Inter-island travel and travel to the mainland is required for training, support and to ensure that company safety policies are being followed.
  • Be a technical resource in assisting with the drafting and implementation of corporate safety and health programs, procedures and policies, leveraging industry programs and benchmark practices as necessary.
  • Work with Corporate Safety on the creation of Company-wide Hazard Alerts and Safety Newsletter.

SKILLS/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Safety/Construction Management/Business, plus 15 years of related safety experience.
  • Possess a working knowledge of laws and legislation surrounding the construction industry in the State of Hawaii, and the various aspects of Safety and Risk Management.
  • Must possess or attain the CHST and AP/CSP certifications.
  • Certified in OSHA 500 and 501, or ability to attain.
  • Must have experience working with industrial claims processes.
  • Must be proficient using HCSS Safety, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook programs.
  • Valid State driver’s license and clear driver’s abstract record.
